    Possibly the most ridiculous, blatantly false exceptionalist statement I've ever seen.

    Muslims, Soviet Marxists, Africans, Spanish, Chinese (Tibet) and Portuguese invaded existing countries, captured cities, and erased civilisations. British settlers arrived in virtually uninhabited wastelands (USA, Australia, Canada) and developed them with ethics, law and order.

    I wanted to pull a quote from this piece by but I couldn't choose because it's all so good. Now to figure out how to assign this to my students.

    What an amazing primary source!

    I re-wrote a chapter intro today from this mss., which has the earliest substantial vocab of any W. African language, recorded by French merchants in the 1530s so they could conform to Kru trade protocols. Wisconsin's library had Kru grammars and everything else I needed. Woot!

    Another great student question: Did Native people in the Americas enslave each other? Short answer: yes, but it wasn't race-based, wasn't usually cruelly exploitative, and typically wasn't permanent. These were societies with slaves, not slave societies.

    So impressed w/ students in US History I this semester. They ask such great questions! Today, during talk of c16-17 European exploration & colonization: Why wasn't Germany doing it too? Short answer: there wasn't a unified German state to support it.

    Instead of asking "How can I help?" ask "What types of problems/challenges are you running into/trying to overcome?" Students may not know HOW you can help, but will know WHAT they could use help with. As a I had no idea of the resources/processes.

    Welp. Lectured briefly on Acoma yesterday, but clearly I'll be referencing this tweet when we dig deeper into Spanish imperialism in the Southwest. I sure hope there's a photo out there of Oñate's footless statue.

    This Day in Labor History: January 22, 1599. Spanish troops began their attack on Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. This incredibly violent incident and aftermath created a regime of labor under Spanish rule that would have devastating impacts on Native peoples!

    Welp. Classes start tomorrow and now I clearly need to change my first lecture.

    This is a fascinating piece about the politics behind history textbooks. I encourage history educators to share this with their student. It might even be worthwhile to do a textbook comparison in class.

    Beautiful buildings. My ancestors' village in East Prussia was 10% Jewish in the early 20th century, but the town website today doesn't even mention them once in its town history going back 2500 years. People have been systematically erased by religious and nationalist violence.

    THREAD: The great wooden synagogues of the shtetls were probably the greatest ever architectural expression of Yiddish culture. All lost in the Holocaust.
