the problem isn't "policing reform", most people agree that it's badly needed. the problem is bad slogans. you need to win elections in order to change the system.

No idea why its so hard to grasp, if your slogan actually builds more support against than for it, it's a bad slogan. It's hard to handle this in a tweet, short of it GOP uses fear of middle class whites, defund played right into their main playbook.

The “defund” messaging threw a lot of folks off. Like, I get that reallocation of funds needs to happen as does policing reform (which was what most meant by “defund”), but I think folks thought we meant the abolishment of police... which clearly wouldn’t work at this juncture.

When your slogan is "defund" the police," people get the impression that you want to defund the police. They don't stay around for the footnote that what you really mean is reform the policy.

Tired of Reporters reporting this as though they weren't there when these atrocities happened. Real tired of sme reporters spinning junk stories so they can keep access to folks. This is an untrue narrative perpetuated by reporters as well as officials.

It’s hard to argue with police reform. Where most people were lost was in the term “defund.” It turned 95% of the country off. People don’t want there to be less police, which is what defund translated to everyone. Terrible messaging, terrible marketing.
