He was arrested and accused of stealing a backpack. Too poor to pay bail, he was held for 3 years at Rikers, primarily in solitary confinement. He later commits suicide.

He was a good student with dreams and purpose. His accuser never pursued the case and his mother dead of heartbreak. This should not have happened.

This tragedy also illustrates the need for deeper reform; a more responsive judiciary and a better resourced public defender system (complete with equitable reforms to make PDs more powerful systemically) could've also saved Kalief's life

No, we need an end to white supremacy altogether. Police reform will do nothing as long as the enemy is still able to run things. There's laws on the books to enforce things now, the white supremacists won't enforce their own laws when it comes to Black people.
