The Sons of Confederate Veterans extols the virtues of the Confederacy. Its mission is to instill "devotion to and reverence for the principles represented by the Confederate States of America.” Those principles include white supremacy. Why on earth is UNC supporting this?!
Silent Sam — a racially polarizing statue of a confederate soldier holding a rifle, had stood on UNC’s campus from 1913 to 2018. After Charlottesville, protesters felt urgency and pulled it down. SCV wanted possession of Silent Sam but had no ownership interest in it and no valid legal claims. UNC & Sons of Confederate Veterans were working together. The sham litigation and pre-signed consent decree provided cover for UNC’s transfer of the #SilentSam statue and its $2.5M payout.
