Prisoners in 2 Virginia facilities were held for years in almost complete isolation with virtually no way out. Those in solitary confinement are in 8 X 10 foot cells. Although there are people nobody should be in a cell with, the seg area usually seems to have a lot who don't seem the type. As a c/o you are in with them when you take them to the rec area, where they maybe have a ball to bounce off the wall.
