In 1975, there were 303 Black students at #Stuyvesant, one of NYC's elite public schools. Look how the numbers have declined:
1980: 212
1990: 147
2000: 109
2018: 10
2019: a mere 7 Black students even offered slots
This backsliding is indefensible and borderline CRIMINAL.https://twitter.com/elizashapiro/status/1107744299582660609 …

The Stuyvesant alumni association FB page has a robust debate on this (I'm an alum). There is a solution to this situation focused on improving preparation at feeder schools as opposed to simplistic affirmative action.

And of course it also points to the bias of the test, the lack of education & care at lower levels from the start & places an enormous financial burden on black parents whose children are qualified to attend these schools, but are forced to seek out high priced private schools.

Exactly. I've been belaboring this same point for years. These tests are like holding a 100 yard sprint, but 40% of the runners get a 20 yard head start. Then the winners claim that the finish line was the same for everybody.

Since that school bases admissions on SOLELY academic performance, maybe it should be the Middle School's that are to blame.

Accepting kids who couldn't get in based on test puts them in position where they might not be able to keep up & sets them up for failure. Or it'd require lowering quality of education for everyone else in the school. The overall education in NY is a problem, not this school.

Infuriating! Are all the stakes put into the test score or is there a demographics section in the application process? If it is only through test scores, who has access to prep materials or even the test itself?!

Apparently a bunch of poor Asian kids seemed to squeak in. 74% Asian at one school. The best test prep is studying hard in school, and having that reinforced at home by parents. I understand the test itself is free to take.
