Why does their sexual preference, skin colour, ethnic background matter? Surely we should just be happy there are more women engaging in front line politics and not get bogged down with identity politics?

Because those things give people different experiences of the world that aren't currently being taken into account. Having that info in decision making creates more fairness and greater efficiency.

Really pleased to see a House of Representatives that more closely mirrors America. However, I do believe Barney Frank was the first openly gay Congressperson. Also the first same sex wedding for a sitting Congressperson.
