Do you think they will do better with Xilinx than Intel did with Altera?

Hard to do worse :) But seriously, AMD has no experience buying such a large company since it bought ATI. But completely new management team. I suggest AMD hires some people with pertinent experience.

Asked Mark today about AMD expanding into iot/automotive and other tech markets with large TAM opportunity. He said only really focused on markets where AMD can make a difference.
-
But adding Xilinx makes that statement irrelevant. Xilinx is already in those markets.

It’s all about the Data Center. Don’t overthink it.
-
Xilinx's business in Data Center is not worth $30B.

Remember how buying Altera saved Intel? Me neither. Now is the time to make acquisitions, because AMD's equity is at an all-time-high....but just like with Intel+Altera, where is the synergy in this deal? Why not buy a lawnmower maker, that doesn't overlap either.

Not much synergy and is a heavy bet at 30% of your market cap.

I have been expecting this for a while... would be a good move to use the stock while they can

I'm really concerned though. AMD has no experience with such a big acquisition. Buying ATI almost killed the company. At least Nvidia built up to buying Arm with progressively larger deals.
