This preprint sounds cool🧠🐝: "We opportunistically captured bees ... in different open fields and urban parks from Andalusia...32 unique species...", used some PGLMM. Verdict: 🧠🐝"Brain size predicts learning abilities in bees"🐝🧠

Very excited to share our paper now out in on the evolutionary dynamics of cognitive evolution in paper wasps led by amazing postdoc Sara Miller (not on twitter). Evolutionary dynamics of recent selection on cognitive abilities 1/n

An amazing day surveying sea caves in for roosting with . Some caves were hunted out decades ago but this one had 100s of birds! (thread)

Out now in BiolLett , we find a general but non-parallel increase in brain size of guppies introduced to low pred sites. No change in region sizes. Together suggests weak selection on brain morph? Thx to coauthors &

Young fish are born at a larger size. As brain size is measured as being relative to body size, it is possible that our results reflect these life-history changes with a lag in brain anatomy evolution.

...and the initial period after the introduction was a period of relaxed energetic pressures: populations were under carrying capacity with abundant food availability. Once populations were subject to density regulations, selection pressures switched from fast to slow growth and

We found they do not. On the contrary - most populations evolved larger brains. Why? Maybe beacause of a relaxation of selection on the constraints to the upper and lower limit of brain size in the initial period after the introductions. Brains are expensive...

We previously selected on brain size in guppies and found that this makes them more clever and gives them a survival advantage under predation so when translocating fish from high to low predation they should evolve smaller brains?

We ( and ) investigated the relationship between predation pressure and brain size from a new angle: Translocating high predation guppies to low predation sites impacts their brain evolution, but in an unexpected way. Thread
