This is the kohekohe bush I trap in, slightly less than a decade apart. There was barely any regen after fencing, not until we started pest control. Rats were essentially mowing every seedling that tried to grow. Pest control isn't just for birds, it's for whole ecosystems.

One of the resident birds, the Double-crested Cormorant, “serves as a sort of Rorschach test” about attitudes about wildlife, conservation, and the role of people.

Yet another survey finds majority confidently endorses dangerously wrong interpretations of p-values & CIs. Conclusion: "there is a need for better statistical training in science". What's that definition of insanity?

Kelp forests are being decimated by runaway ocean heating in Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, with huge losses to economy and society. Good to see this highlighted in and hopefully a call for action for .....

Last week we had the privilege of catching up with the good folks at Stewart Island / Rakiura Community Environment Trust. We're supporting SIRCET and Halfmoon Bay School with their little penguin/kororā monitoring programme.

Great example of why dams are not the best source of renewable energy. The flow-on impacts to fish populations can be significant. The salmon fishery in the US is still trying to mitigate those impacts.

What's your 'worldview'? Research just published groups New Zealanders according to four worldviews to predict how those groups might respond to gene drive technologies

Men demanding guns for their role as protector-of-the-family are full of it. They are only willing to protect in make-believe instances that are never likely to happen. When asked to *actually* protect their family, by doing something like laundry, they can’t be bothered. 25/25

When I hear men worshipping guns and talking about how there’s nothing that will stop them from defending their family, my mind goes to Naaman in the Bible. Do you remember Naaman? He was a great military leader, and he also had leprosy. 1/

"According to Blaha the only truly sustainable thing we can do as humans is to all die at once. Anything else implies a compromise." 😂 This is funny but so true. Everything you eat has an impact.
