Or if you want to mould words so they are consistent and strong, mould them around the existing concept. It is the same issue you have with functional connectivity. That is a clear definition. It just doesn’t do what it says. Same here.

You can’t make the meaning of representation depend on the behaviour you are measuring. Just breaks the whole thing. You need a new word.

They do if they are going to be imposed on experimentalists. Alternatively just each to their own. But their needs to be compromise for collaborations to progress. Definitions need to be useful.

I am (and not speaking for my co-authors here) saying that the wording allows us to implicitly claim more than what is supported by our data. "Representation" is used because it resonates with our target audience. Not despite but because it misleads.

I thought most neuroscientists define representation as @behrenstimb and @jpillowtime do, in which case using it doesn't implicitly overstate anything. It feels like making the current use clearer would be more helpful than changing to a (to me) quite different definition?
