Everything can change in a generation. Today my sister Nola officially welcomed as a County Court Judge. 1st Greek Australian woman to be appointed. My mum Sia never went to High School. Her sacrifices & those of my late dad Leo made it possible. I’m proudest brother in the world

There remains more than 210 human beings held against their will in PNG and Nauru that are OUR legal and moral responsibility. Yet there they remain. Suffering. Filled with despair. Nearly 10 years of their lives stolen by our Australian Government for being a refugee. ENOUGH

Just remembered to limit who can reply to save myself from a day of anti vaxxers who think doctors are trying to harm them by keeping them safe from the leading cause of death in Australia.

I feel like a broken record, like Australia has moved on and yet years from now the toll of what is happening now will be grieved and we will ask “how did we allow this” (well I hope at least). Today we will pass 14,000 deaths due to COVID, remember when 1 was too many. Mask😷up

Albanese Government inherited a broken system built on punishing refugees instead of protecting them. Leaving many without work rights was at the heart of dehumanising and erasing them from our view. This government has a burning platform right now to #LetThemWork. #skillssummit

There’s approximately 80,000 refugees or people seeking asylum on temporary visas in Australia. All excluded from University & Apprenticeships. Thousands denied work rights. During a labor crisis. Asylum seekers allowed to work face barriers with only 6 mth visas. #JobsSummit

We have a job crisis in Australia. Yet at the #skillsummit there’s been nothing on the facts we have tens of thousands of refugees and people seeking asylum who could help fill these shortages but can’t because we either won’t let them work or go to university to get those skills

The Albanese Government took to the last election a commitment to grant permanent visas to all these refugees. We again call on them to announce now when this will happen. The refugee community cannot endure another week of uncertainty and a life in limbo.

Did you know young people we’ve accepted as refugees from places like Afghanistan are doing their year 12 and based on grades could do their dream course, filling critical skills shortages at same time. But NONE will see University. Why? Because of their temp visa. #JobsSummit

I know Albanese Gov inherited a broken & cruel refugee system and it will take time to fix it all. However, giving all people seeking asylum the right to work doesn’t take time. It needs no new laws. No budget for it. Just some leadership to show change is happening #JobsSummit

People seeking asylum want to do an honest days work. They want to support their families. They want to pay taxes. They want to give back. They don’t want to rely on charity. Yet Fed Gov policy forces them onto it & then blames them for it. #LetThemWork #JobsSummit

I’m calling on the Albanese Government to provide work rights to all people seeking asylum for the duration of the refugee application processing time. No cost measure for government✔️ Will fill 1000s of jobs in urgent need of filling ✔️ A net benefit to economy✔️ #JobsSummit

The economic impact of letting people seeking asylum work: 75% of people we placed into work at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (when allowed to work) were in industries the National Skills Commission identified as having significant vacancies. #JobsSummit #LetThemWork

We are overwhelmed right now at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre with 1000s of people seeking asylum in need of food, emergency housing or financial aid. What they all share in common is they have no right to work despite being lawfully here. #LetThemWork #JobsSummit

We have a #JobsSummit on to tackle catastrophic skills shortages in our country. Yet there’s thousands of people seeking asylum here now & able right now to help fill these shortages, yet forbidden still from working by ALP Gov & forced to turn to charity instead. #LetThemWork.

There are almost 60 000 people in Australia on bridging visas, and another 20 000 on TPVs/SHEVs .. at a time of near-universal workforce shortages, why not take a practical approach and grant them all the ability to work? It’s in all our best interests.

There’s no point where a man “loses control” and has to rape or kill a woman. All there is is some pathetic entitled small man who thinks he has the right to treat women like property so they can feel powerful & in control. It’s a choice abusive men make. A choice.

Given how the world has changed since these tax cuts were passed, we need to have a sensible conversation about how this money can best be used to benefit as many Australians as possible while tackling the big issues we face today.
