the US is a representative democracy. it being a republic ( and a very tyrannical one at that ) doesn't make it not a democracy.

If democratically elected representatives doesn't equal democracy, then there are very few countries in the world that are actual democracies.

idk, maybe countries that are controlled by monied interests to the detriments of common people shouldn't be called "democracies" but instead aristocracies or oligarchies or something

that's a good point, but you will still never catch me saying "ackchyually America is a oligarchy, not a democracy" ( even though it technically is a oligarchy )

It's both. Representative democracy consists of elected officials representing a group of people, as opposed to direct democracy. Nearly all modern Western-style democracies are types of representative democracies; for example, the United States is a federal republic.
