Toxic positivity yo. When I did cognitive behavioral therapy back in my early 20s, I learnt that it wasn't about erasing negative emotions, but dealing with them in a healthy way rather than an unhealthy way. Trying to ignore or control them, only leads to them controlling you.https://twitter.com/CinderSlays/status/1325235181624569856 …

Positive vibes only and their negative consequences ⬇ "But when we push aside normal emotions to embrace false positivity, we lose our capacity to develop skills to deal with the world as it is, not as we wish it to be." https://twitter.com/TEDTalks/status/1325234078820536321 …

Also I believe that negative emotions are extremely important in the growth of a person - failing, the pain of those failures, acknowledging responsibility and dealing with them head on, ultimately teachers us how to be better people. If you ignore them, you'll never grow.

This is part of the reason I recommend CBT to any Producers! Negative emotion is such a natural part of working in a creative team, that being able to navigate them in a healthy way is so important for a healthy team❤️Also personally my life is 1000% better if I'd never learnt it

I worked with a team that had a very 'positive vibes only' attitude & it was one of the most dysfunctional teams I've worked with. Their maladaptive ways to avoid negativity were so destructive that the team eventually collapsed in on itself, & hurt a lot of them in the process.

Would love to hear anyone elses examples of this in Production! Did you face a team or maybe management that just wouldn't stand for negativity, or purposefully ignored it? How did that pan out?

Also explanation of emotions controlling you if you don't learn how to deal with them: If someone is positive vibes only, you find they can become hyper sensitive to negativity. Rather than processing in a healthy way, the negative emotions will come out as rage, or depression.

In a team setting, this means that even something like everyday artistic or coding feedback can be viewed as a personal attack, because the person doesn't know how to deal with negativity large or small. The amount of issues this causes within a team can be catastrophic.

Not only is it difficult to get anything done, but the delays! Teaching & managing your team in ways of dealing with negativity healthily early on will help things get done on time, on budget & to the best quality, whilst also giving everyone the best experience possible! Win win

Worked for 3 yrs in a dept where you were rated on 15 competencies. If you showed anything other than positivity, your "composure" rating usually sucked. It went beyond that tho. It meant question nothing. We had a presentation on the "yes, and" vs. no ideology.

The dept is now cut in half because the new EVP saw no value in a dept that has no measurable data to show its effectiveness, especially when operations supervisors are also performing that function. Many of us saw it; got out before things got worse. Some left the company.
