    As with all jails - almost everyone at Rikers Island will be released straight from the jail back to their community (after a significant period of trauma in the City's custody).

    of the 5,839 people currently incarcerated in NYC jails only 243 are sentenced. Of the 5,128 there pre-trial more than half will have their cases dismissed (after they are traumatized and lose their job & housing). About 200 will be sentenced to prison.
