Naomi Wilson: "[In] the US government in particular there is heavy emphasis on what constitutes national security threat." Finds that govt has taken tech industry concerns and input about Chinese market on data localization requirements, forced partnerships, and other issues

Wilson: " I want to make clear that tech companies take national security and security extremely seriously. It is part of their livelihood...so it's not really an either/or situation from a tech company perspective." Govt "mirrors" tech company mix of econ/security concerns

Jimmy Goodrich: "US chipmakers from Intel to companies in North Carolina and Boston are making 5G components. The US is still competitive. But there are areas where China is making inroads...reflecting the size of its economy and the innovation that's happening there. "

Goodrich: "5G is going to be a game-changer. In previous iterations, it was about making the phone experience faster. In 5G you bring something called low latency" changes IOT sensors and machine-to-machine communications. Impacts agriculture, healthcare, other sectors

@dennisw5 : "With all this [industrial] promise comes an unknown realm for unknown policymaking. Under the best of circumstances, it is difficult. But now we're dealing with an unknown dimensions, international actors, and an atmosphere of distrust."

Wilder: "China is not as playing by the rules of the international order as we expected. The Ministry of State security and PLA are bolder in state espionage." Asserts that US govt entities as not legally capable of handing intel to companies to gain commercial advantage.

Wilson: "There needs to be work done in the private sector to demonstrate to the public sector how risks are mitigated...because it's one thing for companies can say 'we mitigate risk' and another for them to tell US policymakers how to mitigate risk and develop responses"

Goodrich: "China wasted a lot of money on 3G but now it's learned a lot and the investment allowed them to train up a workforce and put them in a position to compete for 5G leadership now that they've closed the gap technologically" Notes Japan's proprietary network also costly

Wilder: "I think we've seen different reactions from different nations" on Huawei allegations by USG without detailed evidence shared. Australia, NZ agree. Other states assess risk and benefit differently. "The British are thinking things through for" report due in later spring

Goodrich: "It's not a winner take all. 5G is an ecosystem of technology. European vendors excel at core networks, these big back end data centers that process data. Chinese telecomm vendor" excel in base stations.
