1. Maybe this is not his page, but then it means that someone was preparing a provocation against him for a very long time, before the Butina's case. This is unlikely. /2

2. This is his page, and he tried to gain the Russians' trust because he was a CIA operative. This is practically impossible since he was dismissed from the army for larceny and bad behavior. Such a person couldn't get a job at the CIA. /3

3. He really loves Russia. In this case, it's a lesson for Russia's fans: it betrays those who love it

I don't claim he's a Russian spy, but Russia has a history of accusing its own agents of espionage

Do you think this might be a Russian attempt to do a swap for Maria Butina?
-
Of course. In any case, this was done only for a swap for Butina. The question is, why was he chosen?
-
Whelan is either one of theirs or aspires to be one of theirs. I doubt they grabbed him so much as told him what they were going to do.

Given your info, it's an inside job. Both Putin and 45 are on the know. Would not be surprised if whelan was a willing participant in order to facilitate butina's trade.

Those that would betray their country for greed complimenting the enemy for favor and personal gain. Maybe ex-patriots need to be reminded that Russian is not a free country. Maybe he should be an example & left to Russia for Greed over country, Paul Whelan messed up.pic.twitter.com/SimRvlOAt1

Maybe he is a key to LV shooting & POI for FBI. If RU asset, called home before arrest which saves them From another "Butina", but also used as US provocation with spy label. Possible NRA POI too for moneylaundering & RU to GOP bank. Strictly theory MO.
-
There's no conspiracy in this. There are plenty of pro-Putin Russians that get arrested too. Kremlin doesn't care an inch if you're pro or anti-Russian. They used to write letters to Stalin in an era of mass purges: "Comrade Stalin, this has been a huge mistake". It's NOT.
