What does "moral equals" mean here? Deserving of equal status, equal consideration in policy, equal effort to keep alive or to have our lives weighed in the balance? (if so, btw, I agree, we're not equals. Just want clarity!)
The important q is whether a theory’s fundamental moral principles regard people as equals. This can be true-like with utilitarianism’s treating everyone’s utility equally-while the theory supports treating some ppl as more imp than others for the sake of policy or saving lives.
Yeah. As an aside, utilitarians are really slippery here. Singer talks about equal consideration of "interests" but a lot gets smuggled in to interests. I guess old school hedonic utilitarianism might escape unscathed.
Think Singer later changed his mind back to simple heuristics from interest maximization thing.
