Has anyone researched the seniority of men and women who get invited to panels? My subjective experience is that organisers try to nominate 50/50, but are aware of only a very few senior women and a wider spread of men, so fewer women accept.

This sounds likely - when searching for keynotes, search is for seniors. Many suggestions are great scholars, but more junior than invited men. Age plays a role I think.
