Interesting to read this theory from 1864. Has it been proven by anthropology, history or neuroscience or is it a "Just So" story? I'd be interested in reading critiques of it. Does the theory have any "purchase" in the modern imagination? Do the Inuit exhibit these traits?

Versions of the idea go back to the ancients too.

What about Egypt? Or would that be considered temperate?

If I remember correctly, Hart's theory in "understanding human history" is that the Egyptians were descended from a more northern population who developed intelligence in the Caucasus. I don't know how well this lines up with archaeological/genetic findings though.

Ancient Egyptians were less African according to the one study of 1 person. So I guess we wait another month or three for a new study. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28556824?dopt=Abstract&holding=npg …

Glad I don't feel obligated to keep up with this literature, sounds like a full-time occupation.

Arthur Schopenhauer was an even earlier proponent of this theory.
