My daughter is on a high school robot building/programming team. Her teammate, a black girl, just got into MIT. When she tells people that they immediately ask if she got in via affirmative action. She has a 4.0 and got a 35 on the ACT. Can imagine how upsetting it is for her...

AA always opens questions for actually competent people of the low scoring group. It's completely rational to wonder whether they were AA beneficiaries or not. The only way to avoid this is having a single common standard so we can all judge as individuals (as far as possible).

Higher ed should be a meritocracy. We should be putting $ into helping disadvantaged kids in K-12 education better prepare for college, rather than let in people who don't have the academic skills to succeed. Dropping out of college is costly, especially for the disadvantaged
