“adjusting for educational status…” Isn’t this an Everest regression? Or is that your point?
In this case, they are controlling for a mediator, then concluding the cause has no effect. Asian ~~ higher IQ -> more education -> more income. If you control for education, Asians won't be earning more because it's mainly due to their education they earn more.
