I guess a MacDonaldian reply is: Jews split into multiple groups, with the least orthodox spearheading the anti-host movement while also diluting themselves away, while the remaining orthodox breeds in peace. Division of labor.

Very epicycly, yes. But it was the best I could think of. I'm skeptical of group selection in general, and don't really think it could plausibly select for behavior like that.

MacDonald's thesis is explicitly given in group selection, not mere kin selection. Ashkenazis are not that closely related that kin selection would mathematically work out for the scenario above.
