This particular critique has often occurred to me as well. On the bright side, it doesn't usually take very much data for one's initial group-based priors to wash out.

Depends on what the prior is, what you are looking for. Rational use of stereotypes has all kinds of implications, e.g. ethnic profiling in police.

The rationalist social milieu is largely socioculturally distant from e.g. the police. I alluded to e.g. affirmative action, housing policy, etc. If there is no time for priors to wash out, sure, though dark-street-at-3am situations favor avoiding every young male regardless.
