Antonio Regalado continues his series of quite accurate & up to date reporting on the future of genomics. Liberal eugenics is upon us. Ban it and other countries will use it for extreme competitive advantages, and your citizens will fly there for treatment https://www.technologyreview.com/s/610339/dna-tests-for-iq-are-coming-but-it-might-not-be-smart-to-take-one/ …

This is incredibly dumb. If I want to know what my child’s IQ why can’t I just send her to get tested? This is as stupid as the various genetic tests for “
#depression” when I can diagnose depression in a 7 question inventory.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

You can't do that before the kid is born (nor for some time after that)

For that purpose—if you just build a classifier of a linear regression of your parents’ IQ and income you prolly reliably beat that polygenetic test. This is
#theranos nonsense.2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -
Sure. But what do you think will be the variance for you to select out of a bunch of zygotes from the same parents? You can avoid dumb siblings I suppose in the best case scenario.

That seems like a very desirable scenario.

We already have techs of this sort such as the MaterniT21. If we just do it on IVF the impact of the tech is very limited—the real effect of IQ on a social level is between 130 and 85 not 95 and 105. This cannot be addressed except via germline gene therapy.

The impact of IQ is quite linear across the scale. If parents are willing to, say, pay $50k a year for private school to give their children a leg up, a few more IQ points from embryo screening seems a no-brainer.

Actually, it seems to be somewhat nonlinear with a greater slope on the right tail. This makes it easier to get the initial uptake among the rich as the payoff is larger for them. http://infoproc.blogspot.com/2011/04/earnings-effects-of-personality.html …
