My least favorite evolutionary just-so-story is that menstrual cramps is nature/your body’s way of punishing you for not getting pregnant.

Yes, I know people who’ve suggested this seriously- menstruation is still somewhat mysterious (many mammals simply reabsorb their lining) Also, you wouldn’t have to be pregnant all the time- lactational amenorrhea means you don’t menstruate while you’re regularly breastfeeding

My favorite hypothesis is menstruation expels pathogens that may have been transmitted by sperm (although the hypothesis hasn’t been well developed).
