Are there any effective altruist types who think and write a lot about AI who are also interested in genetic engineering and embryo selection? (Aside from @gwern)

You can tell how few people are seriously thinking about this area by the total lack of attention being paid to genome synthesis.
From an EA perspective, genomics while not as powerful as AI does not have the associated AI overlord risks. It has some smaller risks associated with biological warfare/terrorism. So, the expected utility might well be better for genomics research than AI research.

Certainly. EA is already very concerned about pandemics (it's considered a bigger near-future x-risk than AI by many survey-takers), and genome synthesis obviously dials that up to 11, so for that alone it really ought to be more discussed...
