      Well, I just saw the last author is on Twitter (@FSNole57) and this is still a preprint. Maybe the thing to do is to package the two studies together and wrap it as a cautionary tale on causal inference from observational data.

      Although I also wonder: modelling remaining measurement error in the two IQ tests (re @CookieSci & @talyarkoni http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0152719 …) or using Oster's test for unobserved confounding (re @dingding_peng who did that recently here http://home.uni-leipzig.de/diffdiag/pppd/wp-content/uploads/Manuscript-Pursuit-of-Happiness_final.pdf …) may be enough.

      IQ and IQ measurement is more variable for kids than for adults. The ones that underperform at the first test will tend to both (1) score higher at the next test and (2) Hang out with people who are more intelligent, like themselves.
