Weak causal inference, but interesting question to study with randomly assigned roommates. In fact, some one probably did and either didn't write it up or didn't get enough press for me to hear..https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/963100027794141185 …

Denmark's efterskole tradition is the perfect opportunity to do this kind of thing because it throws together ~100 random youths to live together for 1 year in randomly assigned groups of ~8 persons. I have talked to my old school to get permission, but never got around to making

a questionnaire and more formal design plan. Each school year features about 100 students, so one would probably need to sample a few years to get convincing data. (Note: a small proportion of students overlap between years.)

Roommates are also assigned at random initially, but after ~4 months, students get to choose their roommates for the remainder of the time there. This also allows one to check the non-random choice of roommates, as well as an additional random peer.

cool. but ime whenever people write about these things in the context of schools, they seem to end up discovering (or covering up) that it's not truly random assignment. what makes you sure this is different?

I'm pretty sure they told me when I was there, but of course, would need to be something one would check. The students are allocated by sex to hallways, and they prob. try to maintain sex balance in the groups, but other than that, I think it is random.

I wouldn't bet on it (especially the involved teachers might not be random), but sure seems worth finding out.

Theoretically, one could get archive data to check any effects on whatever one can get archive data on. E.g. educational attainment later in life. This would result in a large n, but only a few phenotypes. Would require a Danish prof to get involved though.
