Sounds like common cause to me. AfD and Trump talks about the issues that are currently trending. Do they really have fine-grained enough time data to rule out this?

That would be my guess as well, but I haven't even skimmed the paper. I find the claim implausible enough that I'm fairly confident that, upon reading it carefully, I would be able to show it's bullshit or at least not really supported by their data.

If true of anti refugee sentiment, then very likely to be equally true for other target groups of other political groups. So, I don't see any particular political relevance of it.
