Do you know if someone has successfully broken DASH or Monero's approaches yet? I don't follow the news much, but think these are fairly safe to use even for illegal purposes.

I don't follow closely, but I believe not - or not publicly. However, again, cryptosystems almost always get easier to crack. If I needed long-term security, I'd be very wary of putting the data on a blockchain where someone can easily go back and de-anonymize later.
