While I mostly agree, near vs. far transfer is too subjective a distinction for me, relying on the ol eyeball the tests metric. If, for example, vocab correlates higher with block design than another verbal measure, in what way is one near vs far transfer?

Far transfer = transfer gains to tests that load on different group factors in a large battery. E.g. vocab loads on verbal group factor, so gains made from WM (mostly fluid factor loadings) that are also seen on vocab is plausibly taken as real gains in gen. intel + far transfer.
