[Thread] People in the United States and many other countries are confused about social issues. For example, people generally overestimate the percentage of the population that is Muslim:pic.twitter.com/H5nIdkBpZ0
FYI: The data presented in this thread come from surveys of public perceptions in a number of countries by Ipsos MORI, a UK-based research firm. Here's a link to their 2017 findings: https://www.ipsos.com/ipsos-mori/en-uk/perils-perception-2017 … Some patterns presented in this thread come from other years.
People in many countries overestimate the % of prisoners who are foreign-born:pic.twitter.com/5grhsGBd30
Across countries, people vastly overestimate diabetes prevalence:pic.twitter.com/9Sb0pBEGXk
People also overestimate teenage pregnancy. Generally, people tend to think things are worse than they actually are and that outsiders are more common than they are, which makes people vulnerable to politicians capitalizing on their fearspic.twitter.com/j2iiLUdRaJ
People also tend to underestimate the percentage of the population who are Christian, especially in Christian majority countries. The perception-reality gap on % Christian was largest in the United States:pic.twitter.com/vOO448YvjA
While underestimating % Christian, people tend to overestimate unemploymentpic.twitter.com/vrFVqhH4lO
In conclusion, people think things are worse than they are, that majority groups are less predominant than they are, and that "outsiders" are more prevalent than they are. And people are developing political beliefs and then voting based on these misperceptions.
Case for misperceptions not proven in re. Muslim and Christians. The usual methods to count Muslims are under-estimates as they rely on country of birth etc. legal statistics. Common for Muslims (and other immigrants) to be counted as Natives, especially 2nd and 3rd generations.
