The Past isn't Even Past, except when it is: former slave states have smaller racial gaps on a number of outcomes, including age-adjusted mortality, incarceration, and percentage of households receiving cash assistance.pic.twitter.com/yujwSmYp9x

Is there more to this than that whites in former slave states have worse outcomes?
I remember that Griffe du Lion post that argued this for incarceration rates. I think for mortality that isn't what's going on, I'm not sure for the rest.
I'm interested in how two waves of selection (moving north in the Great Migration and then back South in recent decades) might have decreased mortality for some Southern blacks, but I'm not sure how you would test that directly.
it's odd that RI & MA rank low in the mortality chart, but CT & NY in the middle. Usually CT & NY aren't that far apart from RI & MA on indicators
I think MA blacks are particularly high performing and RI whites are particularly low performing, but you're right that it's interesting. Is it about *not* having concentrated black poverty (ala Bridgeport/Hartford/Syracuse/Rochester,etc?)
yea, CT is worse at concentrated black poverty than MA & RI. And MA & RI blacks have a high % immigrant; less true of CT. A bit surprised at NY, given I think NYC has high minority life expectancy
Ignoring Asians, Hispanics have the highest life expectancy in NYC, Blacks lowest by a lot. But hispanics in NYC are poorer than blacks!http://gothamist.com/2017/05/20/nyc_life_expectancy_rises_but_racia.php …
It's a well known pattern, called the Hispanic paradox.
curious if it will fade with assimilation
