Possible! Though the amounts gained by robbery are so small that it's hard to imagine punishment has a big role
Robbers target the young because they are more available, and because many targets weak people they know already.

Exactly my assumption. If you want cash, burglary is lower risk and much higher reward. Mugging is about dominance, hence choice of victim

A Home Office study a few years ago interviewed muggers and found that the financial rewards were minimal - their main motive was sadism.

Interesting. Most violence is unplanned, no? Suggests impulsive control problem is the main cause rather than sadism or econ gains.
