The best writing is probably back in the 1920's to 1950's, but is so a-contextual today it isn't easy reading, which is putting it mildly.

.. It is the context of the Great Depression and the World Wars, framed in the earlier debate around Railroad regulation, industrialization.

.. Much of that theory was worked out in what is now called the Columbia School of economic institutionalism - bit effect on FDR's policies.

But I doubt if most leaders and so-called thinkers on the modern 'left' understand or follow Stiglitz at all.

There is a lot of great retrospective academic writing on the influence of the Columbia school, but sadly is almost entirely paywalled.

(The 'New Institutional Economics' movement has been, for me, mostly a disappointment, perhaps too Procrustean math-y, too Blank Sl.-ish.)

A brief history of the movement, but sadly in usual economic professionalism mode makes no mention of impact on actual economic ~policy~.
