This is why I ban http://researchgate.net and http://academia.edu links from my pages: far too risky. If worth linking, worth hosting.
Need some script for automagically adding archived versions of flaky URLs (meaning, essentially all URLs...), but especially RG, newspapers

Yeah. But it can be hard to detect a down URL because they often redirect or substitute in unhelpful stuff or switch to paywalls.

Many times I've linked to a Nature or other publisher open article and then a year later it's gone behind a paywall; 'twas only temporary.
