if you have end-to-end encryption enabled they are (to the best of our knowledge) very safe.
@RiotChat how secure are self-messages? I've been using them to securely transfer text between my own units, but is it actually safe?

How safe are the non-e2e rooms? Compared to, say, Skype. Could not find anything about this in your FAQ.
-
On Matrix unencrypted rooms are stored unencrypted on the server, so you have to trust whoever runs the servers participating in the convo.
-
Skype used to be end-to-end encrypted when it was p2p (i think), but possibly with weak keys. Nowadays it's stored in plaintext equivalent
-
so you have to trust Skype implicitly.
