Trouble is that these self-placement data often strongly underestimate the voting behaviors. E.g. US journos often claim to be independent
but when they vote, they vote 90% democrats or something like that, so how independent are they really? We like the voting data.
Troublesome yeah but higher party count in euro countries allows for more granular voting behavior that US
eg center-left and radical left in US votes democrat but Portugal center-left votes Socialist and radical left has other 2 parties to choose
