Supernumerary finger count is probably close to 100% heritable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polydactyly#Causes … @KirkegaardEmil

Subnumenary count less so because sometimes caused by accidents, but also major genetic variation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligodactyly …
@KirkegaardEmil -
General rule: if something evolved, it has genetic variation, & thus heritability > 0.
@KirkegaardEmil -
Prenatal alcohol runs in families but is not genetic. Tough to know GenRul if no one does studies bc gestation too political
-
There's no need to overfuse me with your interest in FAS. And surely FAS is heritable too because drinking is.
@JamboJanet -
Sorry to overfuse (?),but one cannot get FASD unless mom drinks during pregnancy. So, not heritable,but runs in families.

Very disturbing.Scientists? I fear for this society where nonsense can rise to the top. https://videocast.nih.gov/summary.asp?live=10172&bhcp=1 …

@hbdchick The Wikipedia article is plain wrong. Teratogenic toxins are the main cause. -
What Wikipedia article is wrong? Seem to be replying to the wrong tweet.
@timrogers2016@hbdchick -
It's says oligodactyly is usually genetic, but in the past 50 yrs toxins such as thalidomide have been the problem
-
And we know this how...? You are pretty short on citations when making claims. Do you have a review?
@timrogers2016@hbdchick -
There is a large literature on thalidomide. An epidemic of phocomelia.pic.twitter.com/ysRSngERxK
-
Yes, and still you produce no relative estimates... How many children get these from genetic causes?
@timrogers2016@hbdchick -
Do note that thalidomide use is presumably heritable too, so some of the numbers you give reflect genetic causation

at population level, as compared to people that lose fingers on accidents etc.?

@hbdchick Subnumerary finger count at birth is almost always caused by non-genetic disorder (drugs, toxins, trauma).Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
