How large a volume of material do we need if we want to build a 3cm thick Dyson sphere at the mean distance between E and V from the sun?
Maybe easier to just make them from fusion if we have a lot of gas?

That would be one option. Jupiter has over 300 Earth massees. Given enough energy, and a better understanding of fusion

Yes, but if we have 'near infinite' energy (massive amounts of fusion), this may not be that big of a problem.
