Statistics/genetics question: have variance component estimates (eg twin/GCTA) ever been applied outside genetics? Can't find any examples.

@gwern ANOVA is exactly about that: breaking down the variance to different sources. However, usually people use SEM to derive estimates now -
@KirkegaardEmil Sure, but before SEMs & MLMs, weren't they using classic variance equations like 2*(v_dz -v_mz)? How does ANOVA work here? -
@gwern Yes, Falconer's formula. These are derived analytically from quantitative genetics. Not similar to ANOVA inferences (AFAIK).
