@cgpgrey As an ESL speaker, I find IPA incredibly intuitive and hope English starts using it instead of the current archaic spelling system
@pseudoerasmus these are too radical. baby steps. lets get you>u,through>thru,thorough>thro,I>i,should>shud/shoud (ditto could/would)

@KirkegaardEmil "thru" good example of what wd work best: orthographic changes ppl already make spontaneously... -
@KirkegaardEmil maybe go "semitic" on should, could, would, i.e., shd, cd, wd, people already use those ! -
@pseudoerasmus betr to use existng variation and spelng patrns as Webster did. see also my bachelrs thesis https://docs.google.com/document/d/1g5iJKIPQJg2aUqMC0TFol5t1nKF2yJFap1d1erVoZ0o/edit# … -
@KirkegaardEmil but people already write wd, cd, shd, in texts & twitter, therefore these are "existing variation" -
@KirkegaardEmil issue is intellectual masturbation anyway, in mattrs linguistic Anglo world very laissez-faire & conservative simultaneously -
@KirkegaardEmil more interesting is why Webster's limited reforms were adopted w/o state fiat as in most other cases of ortho reform -
@KirkegaardEmil how about Americans saying beɾer (w/ alveolar tap) for "better" instead of beter, or wd you just leave allophones untouched? - 2 more replies
