@cgpgrey As an ESL speaker, I find IPA incredibly intuitive and hope English starts using it instead of the current archaic spelling system
@pseudoerasmus @egukin for a mor thoro reform see e.g. http://emilkirkegaard.dk/en/?p=2676 kut spelng is a mor realistik proposl sins its mor modest. :)

@KirkegaardEmil those are more modest but sometimes most logical will be most resisted (e.g., ʒ=>zh or uː=>uu) -
@KirkegaardEmil uː=>uu would be quite radical in English as uu very alien to English, better to get rid of oo as ʊ -
@pseudoerasmus these are too radical. baby steps. lets get you>u,through>thru,thorough>thro,I>i,should>shud/shoud (ditto could/would) -
@KirkegaardEmil "thru" good example of what wd work best: orthographic changes ppl already make spontaneously... -
@KirkegaardEmil maybe go "semitic" on should, could, would, i.e., shd, cd, wd, people already use those ! -
@pseudoerasmus betr to use existng variation and spelng patrns as Webster did. see also my bachelrs thesis https://docs.google.com/document/d/1g5iJKIPQJg2aUqMC0TFol5t1nKF2yJFap1d1erVoZ0o/edit# … -
@KirkegaardEmil but people already write wd, cd, shd, in texts & twitter, therefore these are "existing variation" - 5 more replies
