When I see someone writing their name as 'X, PhD' I reduce my prior somewhat that what they are about to say is true. Is this generalized?

Yeah, it’s pretentious. It’s only ok if you have a practical reason to tell people. (To combat gender/racial/etc stereotypes is one such reason; sometimes I’ll do it in situations that call for unusual self-promotion, like a slide on a pitch deck).

One can't combat accurate stereotypes by signaling educational credentials. Just gives more suspicions of affirmative action.
