How close is Danish to Old Norse? They remark in the article that an Icelander would still understand it. Is the same true of Danes?

Scandinavian moved a lot further from ON, it is not generally intelligible even in written form. Same is true for modern Icelandic. It sounds vaguely Swedish to me because of the singy tones, but I don't understand anything (source: listening to Icelandair stewardesses).

Yeah, I'd definitely assume two languages to be further apart that either is to its common ancestor (although convergent evolution is not unheard of).
