In India they have similar beliefs but about injections. They believe if the doctor didn't inject you something he did not give you real medicine, so they always ask for injections. Obviously you can't sell something after it was injected to you, so in that case it's sincere.
These kinds of beliefs are typical among low IQers. We have tons of irrational people in the west too (anti-GMO, anti-vax, entire new age industry, diet industry, supplements industry, astral healing, crystal healing, homeopathy etc.), just not many _that_ irrational.
Those beliefs are less common in the areas of India that have good schools and hospitals. Maybe if we had shitty teachers/doctors we would believe weird stuff about medicine too. Or do you think high IQers choose to move to places with better schools and hospitals at all cots?
