  There may be a reason for it. The whole thing could require the gaslighted party to actually be insane for it to work. Doesn't mean it cannot happen at all.

  I've used the term after having to study sociopathy for hundreds of hours. Most people don't encounter gaslighting, so they can't get a good grasp of the meaning. You need to see it to grasp it

  The term is often misused and abused. It can be a useful term in therapy when dealing with people in narcissistic and other personality disordered relationships. But mostly it is used by people who do not want to accept another person's reality.
