Pearl greatly exaggerates the importance of his insights. No real-life problem has ever been solved using Pearl's method--which assumes perfect knowledge of the underlying causal model--so it's safe to say it wouldn't have helped here. Berkson published his collider paper in 1946
Yeah, he's very pompous in the book which is annoying but not annoying enough that it's not worth reading. I haven't finished it yet though.
