It's fascinating to me that (on a country by country basis) conscientiousness is negatively correlated with GDP. My interpretation is that people really really don't want to believe this, so it isn't talked about.
Cross-cultural personality psychology seems almost hopeless. In this case, observed differences were more sometimes more than 100% due to measurement bias, so the real gaps were modeled to be reverse of observed ones...

Back when I paid more attention to cross-cultural personality research, many of the results seemed curious, such as that Swedes and Danes came out wildly different, rather like how Minnesotans and Iowans can talk all day about differences invisible to Texans and New Yorkers.
